One is a Leghorn , the other a Minorca.
Hello - I have never had chickens and would appreciate some advice. I have one cock and four hens who came to live with us a week ago. They seem to have settled and have made a couple of spots in the garden theirs. They come to the door about 6 pm looking for their food and I use their feed to get them to jump up into the coop so we can put them to bed for the night. So far so good! When can we expect them to start laying, will we have to hunt around the garden for the eggs? Is there anyone on this blog who can identify their breeds for me?

Hi guys!

First post here so go easy on me

I bought my first 3 hybrid hens last night and am wondering about settling them in. I have them in an old outhouse which I have cleaned up and disinfected. I have some perching posts, a ladder up to their nesting boxes and a few other bits and pieces for them to play around with.

I checked them a couple of times this morning and they appear pretty nervous. 2 of them are perched up at the back of the nesting boxes and the other one seems to be standing guard on them. Just before I left them the one who was standing guard flew across the shed at me and flapped her wings, is she thinking that I'm going to harm her?

How long should it be before they settle in? Is there anything I can do to help them?

How long will it be before I can expect eggs? The breeder I got them from said that they were already laying.

Also, last question....I plan on keeping them inside until they are settled, their nesting boxes are open...is this Ok? Will they instinctively know where to nest? Should I try put them in their nests tonight?

Thanks

We've got a selection of chickens (maran, sussex, wellsummer and rhode island,) living in a coop I constructed during the summer. The marrans and the sussex are layers as the other four are just 14 weeks old. Recently the one of the two marans has started to lay from the perch at night. These eggs have a soft shell and they just plop down into the pooh below the perch. Are they lacking something in their diet? They've always had the same food and the problem has begun just recently, say the past 3 weeks and she doesn't lay everyday. I'm worried now that she'll get into a bad habit and the others will follow. The chickens are free to roam about our half acre everyday and they are fed in the morning on some scraps from the dinner the night before (usually cooked rice or pasta and some veg) and a half and half of layers pellets and a poultry mix.
I'd be grateful for some insight.
Thanks
M.

I'm really wanting to start keeping chickens and think this is a fine place for them - lots of space and freedom, but walled on all sides so pretty safe from predators - but I was wondering if they could live in the sheds? I realise I'd need to build/buy nest boxes, but would I need a hen house/chicken run when I have the sheds?

Sorry if this seems a really stupid question to experienced poultry people!

Hello,
I am posting on behalf of my Dad, who is in his 70's and is not online!

Anyway, he used to keep chickens years ago as a kid and decided to take it up again. he got 2 hens (unsure what breed) from a friend of a friend last year. One died and the other is still laying.

Last week he got 4 young rhode island red chicks (I think they are 8 weeks old, not laying yet anyway) Now the dilemna is how to integrate the new ones with the older hen. He said the older hen 'went mad' when the young chicks were put into the run with her. So he has seperated the older one and the young ones. He put the young ones into the hen house and run, and put the older one into an isolation area in another part of the garden. I thought this was unfair to the older hen, essentially he is evicting her for the newcomers, but any advice here is very welcome.

The other question I have is what he should be giving them in terms of supplements/dewormers etc. He is feeding them some corby rock chicken crumb at the moment, but he never treated the 2 older hens for worms or any other things they might have? Should he be doing this? Since the last time he kept chckens was back in the 1940's I am sure things have moved on since then!

many thanks in advance for any advice.

Anna.

I have just gotten 4 of these hens (see attached pic). Can anybody tell me what type they are?
Also, I built a chicken run for them and they seem to like it. Is there a favoured type of ground or soil I should have. At the moment the run is built over top soil and fallen pine needles.

Actually, I haven't a clue here, any advice on the upkeep, care, feeding, health etc. etc. etc. would be greatly recieved.

Cheers guys,

Al.
