Turkeys

edited November 2009 in General discussion
Hi all
I just bought some turkeys at weekend at a poultry fair and have placed them in a field i have with appropiate housing but one/two of the turkeys are sneezing - one more so than the other - i have isolated her and placed her in my garage with dust free straw bedding etc but just wondering does anyone have any idea about whether to free range turkeys like this or perhaps leave them all in garage - it is getting colder now at nights? They very well were reared in a barn anyway before i bought them?
thanks

Dave

i freerange my turkeys and they can come in at night if they want.i find that the white turkeys will come in but the bronze turkeys like to roost up high outside at night.because the roost up high i dont wory about foxes getting them.freerange turkeys wont put on the same weight as closed in turkey for xmas but the flavour of the meat is better.they bronze turkeys will eat away at grass so the cost of feeding them can be a bit lower.

The Turkeys i Bought seemrather large already - well the bronze one's do - but the white turkeys areabout 1-2 months younger - i guess am i right in saying that the sneezing may be got to do with the cold and their age also perhaps they re free range now as opposed to a respiratory infection?

PS - whats the best way to kill turkeys come Chirstmas?

Am hoping to find some one locally to give me a hand with it.

    thanks
