Chickens in schools

edited January 2010 in General discussion
Hi everyone,
I just found this site and registered moments ago and I am really delighted to have found this resource. I am a primary school teacher in dublin and some of the parents and I expressed interest in having some chickens in school for eggs and to watch chicks grow on our school grounds. We have a load of enthusiasm but little experience.
I have a few concerns - namely
1. realistic prices of rearing chickens- feed, vet services, prices of chickens, etc and
2.the workload.
The plan is to build an enclosure on the grounds including a moveable chicken house. There would be a rota for feeding and cleaning and also for looking after the chickens during holidays. I would really love to see the project happen in our school - we have a brilliant group of parents who would like to get stuck in and the children would really benefit from the project. I would also love to start a blog with a journal and photographs of our endeavours to help other schools or individuals start in the same way from scratch. I have some requests, which I know is really cheeky from a newbee but it is just out of sheer lack of knowledge. My first request is for anyone who may have experience with a project like this or knows of any groups who offer support in such projects to contact me if possible. The other request I have is for donations of chickens or chicks if the project happens. I would collect the chicks or other donated material from anywhere in the country myself. If you can help or give any other tips to advise us I would love to hear from you!! Thanks a million,
Fiona
