Eating own eggs

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone knows the reason why one of my hens would eat the eggs? I checked the nest box this morning and one of the two placebo eggs is gone plus I didn't check for eggs yesterday so I'm guessing two or three of yesterdays eggs are gone too. They don't seem to keen on the layers pellets I'm giving them. Are they hungry?

    could be lack of calcium in diet
    are you collecting the eggs regularly?they need to be got out of her way
    it a very hard thing to stop once they get into the habit of it
    a roll away trap nest box would be a good idea then she wont be able to get at the eggs
    but i would take her away from the other hen to stop the habit spreading

    another good way of stopping this is put an egg into the nest box and fill it with curry powder / chilli's etc - the hen will more than likely not like this and will stop as they will associate the taste with something not nice ........... but do get to the eggs first so they can't get the habit in the first place.

    I had a light Sussex cock a few years ago that got a liking for eggs. I got 2 eggs drilled a small hole in each, sucked the contents out with a syringe and filled them back up with mustard curry power Tabasco sauce and a few other bits and pieces. It was enough to make your eyes water. Went out to the run placed the 2 eggs in the nest box with a big grin on my face. Watched as the broke the first gave a shudder and then carried on breaking the second one open and devoured the 2 of them. :shock: It nearly made me sick looking at him. He must of had some stomach on him. Next morning had to make role out nest boxes for the hens. ;)

    HERE WE GO AGAIN BEST WAY TO STOP HEN FROM EATING HER EGGS IS MUSTARD IS WORTH A TRY OR PUT A DUMMY EGG R 2 IN WITH HER WHEN SHE SPENDS THE NIGHT TRYING TO BRAKE THE DUMMY EGG AND FAILS SHE WILL SOON STOP
