eye infection in hens

Hello. Has anyone advice about how to treat an eye infection? I have 13 hens and 2 roosters (Marans and Blackrocks, a welsummer rooster and a white leghorn rooster),2 weeks ago i noticed some of the hens and the welsummer rooster had eye infections and were inactive, their eyes closed up and were sticky. They got over it in a few days but one rooster has it very bad now, I've isolated him and am trying to get antibiotics into him,Tylan soluble 0.5g per litre its dissolved in the water bowl but he wont eat or drink and is immobile, still standing but very still, shivering. he has been like this for 4 days, his eyes are closed but he can open one sometimes. I am wondering if it would'nt be kinder to put him down. What should I do?Is there another treatment for this? Oona

Has a vet seen him? Are you sure it's just an eye infection and not mycoplasma? Is he showing respiratory symptoms too - nasal discharge etc.? If it is just an eye infection then probably anti-biotic eye drops might work better (good luck - I've had to do eye drops in a chicken twice! ), first bathing the eyes very gently with warm slightly salt water. Not a pleasant experience for either you or the bird! But tbh, if he is sick in himself, and shivery it sounds like more than an eye infection. If it is myco, the antibiotics may work, or may not. A friend in England recently lost about 13 growers to myco - once it got in, it went through her entire flock and few survived. Of course, the weather was against her too - it was during the cold wet weather. See what a vet thinks. Or have a look at this: http://poultrykeeper.com/chickens/healt ... ticum.html

Ps. You need to syringe the medicine into him. Ask your vet or in the chemist for a syringe for doing this. You put the dose in some water and holding the bird firmly (put him on a chair between your legs andhold his wings down with your thighs if you can't manage him under one arm - or get someone else to hold him) open his beak and squirt the stuff down. Not much at a time though. good luck.
