Bad Weather

edited September 2010 in Feeding & Health Care
We had very bad weather here for the last two days and every evening when i come home the hens look wet and miserable. They have a lovely dry shed but must stand out in the rain. This evening some of the hens are sneezing. Not constantly sneezing only once or twice. They dont have runny noses or any other problems. Is it just because they got a good wetting or should i be worried?
Maria.

marie same happened to my birds,,, they've been sneezing now for a while and i'm goin to go to the vet tomorrow to get anti biotics.. i think its just part of the course with hens they wont go in to the house unless its really bad... at the mo if they not too bad try them with garlic in the food and apple cider vinegar,, that'll boost their immune system but with me a few have gone bad enough to turn to anti b's... best of luck though.....

    Hi Cath,
We started them on apple cider vinegar on saturday. The ducks seem to love it but the hens are a bit weary of it. Everything is just a mess with mud and the ducks arent helping. There is a barnevelder pullet still sneezing and the rooster but not as much. Im not sure whether to just give antibiotics to those two or do the whole flock. I dont like giving it to birds that dont need it. Its only an odd sneeze no other symtoms.
    Maria.

Check wit vet on egg withdrawl as your not ment to eat the eggs after anti biotics but i dosed all as prevention is better than cure and once a week i cook them pasta with a load of garlic and the bloody love it. Didn't get any cider vinegar yet but waiting till i get my automatic water feeder set. which i installing in my new shed as i have build as stupid ducks wont climb the ramp version 1 or version 2 or version 3 now have version 4 butstill no joy and the muck i thinking trying wood chip in the base. I sheeted the top of my inclosure10'x10' with clear corigated plastic to try help keep rain off. but let them into run everyday which i move around garden till i install my fence around my garden(Only a new build)

Dont forget when you get the apple cider vinegar, use a plastic water drinker as it corrodes metal. We had heavy rain and wind here all day and had to put in the hens and ducks before six. Thankfully we have the hen house ready for the winter but thats not alot of good when they go out and stand in the rain.
