Best Breeds of Dog

edited July 2011 in Vermin Control
Hello All

Have been giving some thought to getting a dog as a ratter. So far it seems the Jack Russel is the only name i am hearing.

Are the any others breeds that are as good or is the Russel my best option ?

Did a quick google search, Jack Russel seems to be the best option. Though there seems to be an actual dog bred for this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_Terrier

Well that the case ill go with the russel then. Good idea having a ratter on patrol cant hurt anyway.

As far as I know you'd do well with a Jack Russell.
You might ask around for one that's accustomed to ratting though, pet dogs probably have the instinct but a dog that's used to the work might be more in your interests.
Also I'd be wary about trusting the dog around the hens.
    Good luck!

I was thinking of getting a pup so it will be used to the Hens. The Four Old light Sussex Hybrid I have will soon put manners on it  .

any small working terrier wil do the job
just make sure you get a pup from a working strain
and that he is trained then to do the job you want
